While it remains an anonymous rumor, at the moment -- we wonder aloud whether Solo Cup's executive officers will know, by 5 p.m. today, how large the impairment charge is likely to be, on the former headquarters in Highland Park, Illinois. It is, after all, 26 acres of a quintessential mixed-use "white elephant" -- now that Solo neither manufactures product, nor conducts research and development, nor houses its executives there. Odd, that management of a cash-strapped business would abandon a low-cost, fully depreciated facility like that, for a higher cost one in Lake Forest, during the global recession of 2009.
In any event, it is now time to pay the piper.
